The Story
Cellers Domenys is one of the most important and oldest cooperatives in the south-east of Catalonia. The fruit of effort and cooperative spirit, it emerged in 1917 in Sant Jaume dels Domenys and a hundred years later, with the merger with other cooperatives, it has become a benchmark in the wine world.
Values such as cooperation, participation, innovation and social responsibility have always been the axes that have motivated the cooperative to build an entity committed to the environment. An entity that brings together more than 800 members and that manages more than 3,000 hectares —2,600 of vineyards and 400 of olive trees— within its productive area.
At Cellers Domenys we add value to the activities we carry out, seeking a commitment to quality in all products and services. The current vision for the future in the cooperative world lies in consolidating itself as a leading entity in Catalonia, within the framework of sustainable development and food safety, always offering support to the cooperative’s members and customers. An economic, social and environmental commitment to the territory and to people.
In 2005, the Sant Jaume cooperative began a merger process with other cooperatives in the region, to form a solid, better organized entity with great prospects for the future. An attitude aimed at joining efforts and creating synergies between Catalan cooperatives in the wine sector.
More than 100 years after its origin, the Cellers Domenys cooperative has managed to twin 8 towns in Penedès, Conca de Barberà and Alt Camp with a common objective: to continue growing strongly, producing products with their own character and making people’s lives easier.
The Cava of Cellers Domenys with Designation of Origin is born under the influence of the Mediterranean climate. Calcareous soils and medium and permeable soils give the Cava its own entity and internationally recognized distinctive characteristics. The best grape varieties, Xarel.lo, Macabeu and Parellada, and extraordinarily, Trepat, carefully selected, combine in perfect harmony for an enriching elaboration of the Tres Naus Cavas, which, made according to the traditional method, stand out for their aroma, taste, texture and color.
Also known as quality sparkling wine, cava is mainly produced in the Penedès regions. Production in the territory concentrates a large part of the millions of bottles that are bottled annually. The Cava Regulatory Council ensures the origin and quality of cava, made using the traditional method or “méthode champenoise” (second fermentation in the bottle), which is produced in 160 municipalities in Spain. Of these, the majority are located in the four Catalan provinces: 67 municipalities in the province of Barcelona, 52 in Tarragona, 12 in Lleida and 5 in the regions of Girona.
